OpenSolaris Options Show Promise (eWeek)

eWeek reviews three OpenSolaris live CD distributions. "eWEEK Labs recently scoped out the current OpenSolaris environment, spinning up three LiveCD-based OpenSolaris x86 distributions: NexentaOS Alpha 5, Belenix 0.5 and Schillix 0.5.2. We found that none of these systems is ready for production use but that they certainly represent burgeoning development diversity for Solaris. What's more, these distributions point to intriguing new directions for Solaris, particularly in the case of NexentaOS."

How *surprising* that Schillix has stalled. With a peak of two developers and the potent Schilling factor, I'd have expected it to take over the world by now.

;)

Every now and again I look at these and consider trying them, and then realise - what's the point? The bits I'd be interested in are the applications, which run just as well (if not better) under Linux.

But if people are happy to spend their time tinkering, who am I to stop them? :)

(There are a few bits of Solaris 10 which sound interesting - Zones and DProbes, for example - but those are more at the OS level, and I can't really go digging around in there...)
