Oracle may make Linux stack move (computing)

Oracle may be planning to release its software on the Ubuntu distribution, according to this article on computing.co.uk. "Oracle could finally announce long-mooted plans for a software stack by adding a branded version of the Ubuntu Linux distribution to its database, application server and tools at the Oracle OpenWorld conference that opens on 22 October in San Francisco. The will-they-won’t-they question could be resolved after a recent research note issued by financial analyst Jeffries & Co. suggested that “Ubuntu is currently working to certify its recently introduced server operating system to all of Oracle's major products, including database and middleware”."

Sounds to me like Ubuntu is going to get certified for Oracle like RHEL and SLES are.

Larry likes to make little thinly veiled threats, which are ultimately impotent. It's a mistake to put much credence in them.

All these speculative articles are much ado over something which is actually significant and good... but rather mundane.

I'm sure the folks at RedHat know this as well or better than I do.

It's not hard to imagine Larry bragging, behind the scenes, about how he has them shaking in their boots, though.

I don't know about the execs, but Larry certainly has some RedHat investors shaking in their boots. Those execs need to hit the presses with something more substantial than "Pfft!"

What about the Oracle investors?

Oracle's business is being eaten at the low end by MySQL and postgreSQL. Oracle's idea of cooperation from Linux vendors might include discouraging their engineers from helping to make LAMP work better.

Are they moving the kernel stack or the user stack?
