Next, you need to decide whether you need any of the new CONFIG options. If you're smart you'll use make oldconfig, but that won't help when you get asked if you want, for example, DMA engine support. (My hard disk etc uses DMA, but is this a new option for that code, or new code for some new device I don't have?)
What happens when ipchains compatibility is removed from Netfilter? I'll have to rewrite my firewall rules, and that is a big deal.
I also need 10's of megabytes of development tools if I haven't installed them already.
