The current breed of developers I know had 8-bit computers as children. They came at least with a BASIC interpreter, and that is how we learned to program; most people would just play games on them. Nowadays Windows and Mac OS X computers come with nothing similar.
Open a terminal window under Mac OSX and type:
$ echo $SHELL
/bin/bash
$ which python
/usr/bin/python
etc. etc. The possibilities are still there!

In "8-bit times" not every child with a computer started programming, 90% was happy with just playing commercial games. Things aren't much different nowadays; only a small percentage of computer users will become hackers. (How much is 1% of 6 billion?)
