It might be argued that every little bit helps, though. Who would have thought 15 years ago that the GPLv2 would be such a big influence in the industry as it is today?

Industry has had a huge impact on Linux' assorted distributions (and viceversa, in many cases), but that is a completely different kettle of fish. Besides, anti-DRM efforts have had their impact on PCs: Remember the CPU-ID stuff, and the whole blabbering about "trusted PCs" (trusted by the RIAA and MSFT, not the user!)? It all came to nothing, because Joe Sixpack users weren't happy, and that is the right way to go about this problem. A license that prohibits use of the code in some embedded settings (where it isn't all that popular to begin with) won't change anything. Linux is pervasive in higher end uses, and there you see (slow) openings: Intel is contributing drivers for WiFi and graphics, Oracle and other large vendors do support their stuff on Linux, etc.
