Subject: [Helix] Community Updates #3 (Helix DNA Server Launch, Mac OS X port of Producer and Client)
Date: 17 Jan 2003 12:55:04 -0800

Hi everyone,

We're gearing up to release the Helix DNA Server, the third of three big
source code releases into the community. There have been a number of
other things happening as well:

Headlines:
1. Helix DNA Server release, January 22
2. Mac OS X port of Producer and Client
3. New stable Helix DNA Client branch
4. Access, Equator, Intel, and NEC join the Helix Community
5. New mailing lists for Helix DNA Server and Producer
6.  Helix Community is hiring!

========================================================================
1. Helix DNA Server release, January 22

The third stage of our three stage release is upon us. The Helix DNA
Server will be available January 22. The Helix DNA Server is the core
engine for digital media delivery. Tune in at 11 am PST January 22,
2003, when we'll mark the event with a launch announcement Webcast
featuring Rob Glaser, (Chairman & CEO, RealNetworks) and Helix
partners

We'll also be broadcasting a live Q&A Webcast with Helix developers.
Damon Lanphear (Helix Server Developer) will be giving a technical
overview, followed by a techical Q&A session in two parts; one with
the Helix Server team (Dean Collins, Damon Lanphear, and Atin
Kothari), as well as a follow up general Helix session with Greg
Wright from the Helix Client team, and Steve McMillen from the Helix
Producer team. Email your questions about the Helix DNA Platform
before and during the live Webcast to: webcast@helixcommunity.org.
There will be many of us on IRC during and afterward to field
questions as well (see https://www.helixcommunity.org/2002/irc for
connection information).

========================================================================
2. Mac OS X port of Helix DNA Producer and Client

The Helix Producer team has been busy with many Mac OS X related
improvements to the Helix DNA Producer. The upcoming Helix DNA
Producer 9.1 release will be the first release of the Helix DNA
architecture for Mac OS X. Additionally, a true command-line
interface for OS X is now working in the source code version you can
build today (look for support in the upcoming milestone releaase).

The latest roadmap with the plan from the Helix Producer team is
available here:
https://helix-producer.helixcommunity.org/roadmap

More news from the Producer group is available here:
https://helix-producer.helixcommunity.org/servlets/ProjectNewsList

Additionally, the Helix DNA Client team is also working on a Mac OS X
port. Look for more details on dev@helix-client.helixcommunity.org for
this in the coming weeks.
========================================================================
3. New stable Helix DNA Client branch

Henry Ping writes: "We have our first Helix DNA Client branch
(hxclient_1_0_beta_2002-12-20) created. It's a stable branch which we
endeavor to ensure it compiles and runs at all times. [...] Please
report any issues related to this new branch to
dev@helix-client.helixcommunity.org or post them to our developer IRC
(https://www.helixcommunity.org/2002/irc/)"

If you've had problems in the past compiling the Helix source code,
it may be that you've checked out code at a time when the build was
broken (it's never our intent, but it does happen). This is one way
we hope to make it convenient to grab a "known good build".

For more information about this build, see Henry's full mail to the
dev@helix-dna.helixcommunity.org list:
https://helix-dna.helixcommunity.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=dev&msgNo=174

We hope to provide a more complete branching strategy for all Helix
DNA projects, which we'll announce in a later newsletter.

========================================================================
4. Access, Equator, Intel, and NEC join the Helix Community

RealNetworks recently announced that these four leading consumer
electronics technology providers have licensed the Helix DNA Client
and RealAudio/RealVideo to enable Internet media on consumer
electronics devices such as DVD players, televisions, audio receivers,
PDAs, and mobile devices. Details can be found in the press release:

http://www.realnetworks.com/company/press/releases/2003/helixcommunity.html

We're excited to have all of these companies on board, and look
forward to working with them.

========================================================================
5. New mailing lists for Helix DNA Server and Producer

As we've released new software, we've also rolled out new mailing
lists. In anticipation of the completion of the Helix DNA source code
rollout, we've completed the set of lists for the community to join to
discuss the technology:

* dev@helix-dna.helixcommunity.org, for development discussions around
all the Helix DNA

* dev@helix-client.helixcommunity.org, for development discussions
around the Helix DNA Client specifically

* New as of December 9: dev@helix-producer.helixcommunity.org, for
development discussions around the Helix DNA Producer specifically

* New as of January 15: dev@helix-server.helixcommunity.org, for
development discussions around the Helix DNA Server specifically

Anyone who has registered for the site can join these lists -- just
visit https://www.helixcommunity.org/2002/intro/mailinglists/ for links
to these and other lists that may be useful to you!

========================================================================
6.  Helix Community is hiring!

The Helix Community needs a Program Manager to assist in the
operations of the Helix Community. More information on the position
can be found on the RealNetworks website at the following address

http://forms.real.com/rnforms/company/jobs/results.html?keyword=helix&submit=Search

That's all for now. Be sure to tune in for the Webcast on January 22!
