Mandrake Linux 9.1 Beta 1 is now available!
The first Beta of the upcoming Mandrake Linux 9.1 for x86 is now
available for download & testing. Beta 1 includes kernel 2.4.21pre2,
XFree 4.3Beta, plus the graphical installer and several Mandrake
applications have been ported to Gtk2.0. This first Beta has been
downsized to fit on only one CD -- MandrakeClub members will determine
which applications should be included in Mandrake Linux 9.1 via the
RPM-voting system. Everyone is invited to download Beta 1 from the
usual locations, then report any bugs to 'BugZilla'

The independent web magazine 'Open' interviews MandrakeSoft's Gaël
Duval to find out how the company intends to overcome its recent
financial challenges:
"One analyst who recognizes MandrakeSoft's resiliency is Stacey Quandt
of Giga Information Group. In 2001, Quandt was predicting how, 'When I
look at the consolidation of the Linux market, I think MandrakeSoft is
one of the few companies that will survive, even though Red Hat has
become the de facto standard for enterprise.' She was noting the
popularity of MandrakeSoft's Linux among programmers and others seeking
desktop software, rather than products offered by a server-oriented Red
Hat."

OSopinion.com -- The Mandrake Linux Mystery.
OSopinion writes: "2003 could be a big year for Linux, which is
expected to keep spreading like wildfire in the server market. Amid
this climate of growth, up-and-coming distributions like Mandrake,
which has won glowing reviews from users, may try to make inroads into
the enterprise market. Yankee Group analyst Laura DiDio told NewsFactor
that Mandrake has three major factors going for it: 'stability, ease of
configuration and default security configurations.' But does it have a
chance against market leader Red Hat?"

RPM Voting.
As mentioned in the 'Top Story', MandrakeClub members can now vote for
RPMs to be included in the next release. Here is how the RPM-voting
system system works:

 * Club members get 2 vote(s) each week. Each vote can either be used
   to vote for an application that is already in the list, or to
   propose a new one. In case you forget to vote one week, you will
   still get new votes next week, up to a maximum of 8 total votes.
 * In order to vote for applications that are already in the list, just
   check the corresponding checkboxes, and press the VOTE button.
 * If the application you want isn't in the list yet, propose it
   yourself.
 * To ensure that you do not miss anything important, we will keep you
   informed via email whenever the status of an application that you
   voted for changes.

The 'Paradise Zone' is part of The Salvation Army, based in Poplar,
London, UK. They recommend and use Mandrake Linux as a cost-effective
replacement for existing Microsoft systems.

"Using Mandrake Linux saved a huge sum of money enabling us to invest
in much better hardware. We are using Mandrake Linux in a central
server that acts as File server for approx 60 user accounts (still
growing), print server and Internet Gateway. We have an IT suite with 8
PCs running Mandrake Linux that are used for educational purposes with
young people aged 9-22. [...] How young people would be able to adapt
while only having Microsoft experience we did not know. However, our
fears have been totally unfounded and within very little time getting
to know different icons most young people were able to do everything
they wished to do. We have found it to be an excellent IT educational
vehicle."
