Following a BoF session at this year's aKademy today I officially announce the
start of the NEPOMUK-KDE implementation effort.
Nepomuk [1] is an europeean research project which intends to create
the "Social Semantic Desktop", a comprehensive solution â methods, data
structures, and a set of tools â for extending the personal computer into a
collaborative environment, which improves the state of art in online
collaboration and personal data management and augments the intellect of
people by providing and organizing information created by single or group
efforts.
Thus, the Nepomuk project intends to provide the basis for implementations of
the idea of the "Social Semantic Desktop". This NEPOMUK-KDE project will be
the first implementation of this kind based on and aimed towards KDE4
technology.
To get a "quick-start" idea of what NEPOMUK-KDE is think of a combination of
technologies like Tenor, Strigi, or Beagle combined with an all-explaining
ontology and advanced p2p features that allow communication of all the
information stored on the desktop.
The main focus of the project will be to
1. Provide an implementation of the Nepomuk service architecture, most
importantly the RDF storage and query services.
2. Implement the first use cases as stated in the Wiki [2] (for example
generic file tagging)
3. Implement highly usable KDE4 GUI components
4. Provide a basis for "hands-on" feedback to the Nepomuk project to
exploit practical problems and help in creating high-end standards.
If you are interested and want to participate (even if this only means
providing ideas or following the discussions) please subscribe to the new
nepomuk-kde mailing list [3] and monitor the Wiki [2].
Cheers,
Sebastian Trüg

about it.
