Mandriva Linux 2007 released

It's now official: Mandriva Linux 2007 is available. It has all the new stuff, but also a certain amount of proprietary software (LinDVD, for example), so there is no downloading without purchasing the distribution first. "The key innovation of Mandriva Linux 2007 is the spectacular AIGLX and Xgl 3D-accelerated desktop. Mandriva is the only distribution to provide both technologies, making it compatible with the widest range of hardware; a special tool features auto-detection of the best 3D solution for your hardware. Mandriva is particularly happy to have achieved this major breakthrough in desktop appearance."

Correction: As some commenters have pointed out, there is a free version available for download - they just don't make it easy to find. We blew it, and regret the error.

From the Marketing blurb on Intervideo's LinDVD site...

"Not only that, Microsoft has designated InterVideo as a provider of their Windows Media Technology for Linux based CE devices, further leveraging InterVideo's cross-platform strengths."

What on earth can that combination of words mean?

`InterVideo produces software that can play .WMVs. Look! They write stuff
for Windows too!'

What ? That's totally wrong. Mandriva 2007 is available for free, and you don't have to purchase anything to be able to download it. You can get a commercial version including some commercial software (such as Cedega, which allows you to play video games made for Windows) if you want, but there is also a free version which includes only free software. It is free and gratis, and it includes all the nice features. You can get it from this page, throught bittorrent (and probably throught ftp mirrors later) :
http://www.mandriva.com/en/download/free

There is also the Mandriva One version, a live-cd which allows you to do an install if you want (but you don't have to, you can use it from the CD, so it's nice for testing). There are differents versions, depending or wether you want Gnome or KDE, only free software or also some proprietary drivers. And you don't have to pay anything for any of them, you can download them from this page :
http://www.mandriva.com/en/download/mandrivaone

There's more details on this page (better than the press release I think) :

Please correct the News !

Right you are, boklm. Mandriva always has a totally free version available for download. (The BitTorrent is problematic, but they say reular FTP will be ready for those with problems.)

Correct your announcement, LWN!

Kudos to LWN for making an obvious correction and apologising rather than
just silently fixing the error.
