Eagle Linux Announces New Version 2.0
SPOKANE, WASHINGTON -- January 12, 2003 -- Eagle Linux, an educational Linux
distribution that offers users the ability to build personal floppy and
CD-ROM based distributions, today announced the release of Eagle Linux
version 2.0.
Eagle Linux is distributed in the form of an open source "how-to" document
that covers, in full detail, the needed steps in creating a standalone floppy
or CD based distribution from scratch. Version 2.0 is a CD based
distribution, while version 1.0 may be created for floppies or CD. Version
2.0 provides network card configuration (loaded as modules), and full DHCP of
static network configuration while occupying just 4MB of space. This is
accomplished without use of any compression loop devices, which tend to slow
down file access from the CD, which is already slower than file access via
hard drives. As with version 1.0, version 2.0 includes automatic hard drive
mounting to allow access to storage media.
"This is fantastic news for academia as well as business" said Michael P.
Angelo, creator and maintainer of Eagle Linux. "Many times, when an academic
institution has new computer systems donated, there are extreme limitations
on changing the structural contents of the hard drive. This means that if a
particular operating system is pre-installed, the acceptance agreement
dictates that they can not install an operating system such as Linux in a
dual-boot configuration. Eagle Linux allows institutions to create a
distribution fitted to their needs without the need to reconfigure the
original system structure", said Angelo. "Eagle Linux is also invaluable in
assisting instructors in teaching students embedded and distribution design
methods in Linux."
For businesses, Eagle Linux offers users the means to create a fully network
capable, bootable 'business card' CD which allows space for many additional
applications. Eagle Linux also assists businesses in configuring CD images
fit to their particular advertising, client, or in-house needs.
"Future versions of Eagle Linux documentation will provide instructions
necessary for including GUI capabilities and auto-detection of hardware",
said Angelo. When asked of the importance of such a self-created Linux
distribution, Angelo replied "Linux has seen such a dramatic increase in
popularity due, in large part, to its open source nature. Eagle Linux
provides, in full open source fashion, an easy to understand means to achieve
immediate success in Linux distribution design."
