Hitachi unveils new model of Linux-enabled Internet appliance (LinuxDevices)

LinuxDevices.com covers a new model of Hitachi's Linux-based FLORA-ie wireless web pad. The device has a 10.4-inch TFT LCD screen and is based on a 400 MHz Transmeta Crusoe processor running Midori Linux. It has built-in Ethernet and 802.11b wireless, and also provides two USB ports plus both CompactFlash Type II and PC Card (PCMCIA) expansion slots.

Hitachi webpad: ~$1200(US): 128-256Mb RAM, 64Mb Flash (18Mb user avail.)

I've anxiously awaited general consumer availability of webpads for several years. However, at this price point (~$1200 US) for this perfomance level (128Mb RAM + 64Mb Flash) it sounds like I'll have the extra mini-tower and CRT in my living room for another year or so.

That's a problem for anyone that's trying to be innovative in the computing market --- it's pretty hard to get to mass production economies of scale with any "niche" product; and it's very hard to open a niche into a major mainstream market with a high price point.
