So what about winmodems or wireless cards?
There are countries where it's illegal to let the user change the card firmware (if that is security by obscurity or not it's not the point), so those cards will never be free (even if it's illegal to be free).
Also many only allow those devices to be connected after the firmware is approved by some institute (to make sure they only use certain frequencies, etc).
Should we just consider all those devices to be non-free? Even if the firmware is publically accesible and with no strings attached?
To me seems like useless fanatism...
