Old kernels and new compilers
I maintain the firmware for some embedded devices that still run 2.4 kernels. I will eventually move them to the 2.6 kernels, but that is a pretty big job, and I have lots of other things to do. I do development under Ubuntu 5.10, which has packages for both gcc 4.0 and 3.4 which can be installed simultaneously. I find that it is only slightly inconvenient to use an older compiler for the kernel.
