Gentoo Linux Public Announcement
=======================================================================
Gentoo 1.4 Release Candidate 2 debuts today.
=======================================================================

Gentoo Linux <http://www.gentoo.org> is proud to announce the second release
candidate for the upcoming 1.4 version of Gentoo Linux. New in 1.4_rc2 is the
Gentoo Reference Platform: a suite of binary tarballs that allow for faster
initial installation. Currently X, GNOME, KDE, Mozilla, and OpenOffice,org are
available as binary installations for x86 architectures (optimised for i586,
i686, pentium3, athlon, athlon-xp, and athlon-mp) and ppc architectures (optimised
for G3 and G4), with sparc (ultrasparc optimisation) and alpha to follow soon.

The Gentoo Reference Platform (GRP) is slated to be able to provide a fast
installation of Gentoo Linux to a completely usable graphical environment. The
binary packages provided have been compiled with safe optimisations for each
architecture and safe USE settings to allow a maximum interoperability with
future packages that users might like to install.

The CD based install method has been greatly enhanced since previous releases of
Gentoo Linux. The LiveCD for installation now works with a much larger variety of
hardware (autodetected), and provides a completely working Gentoo Linux system
which can be used for install (a stage 1 installation tarball is provided on the
CD images) and for rescue purposes. The LiveCD debuts for the ppc architectures
in this release. The Sparc/Ultrasparc platform will see a LiveCD within weeks.

The next release of Gentoo Linux in two weeks will be either a final release
or the third Release Candidate for Gentoo 1.4, contingent upon final standards
being met. The GRP for this release (RC2) is very preliminary, and will be
much enhanced for the next release, with a larger selection of binary packages
for each architecture.

We encourage users and prospective users to try out Gentoo Linux 1.4 Release
Candidate 2, available from http://www.gentoo.org The future upgrades to next
release will be seamless to all current users of Gentoo 1.4.

As always, we invite and encourage problems to be reported via our bug tracking
system at http://cvs.gentoo.org

Many thanks to all the users and developers of Gentoo Linux for bringing about
the fruition of Gentoo Linux Release Candidate 2.
