Shouldn't this be a distributor problem? Should it even be *supported* or even expected to work when someone compiles a new kernel and sticks in an old distro? The days of compiling our own kernels are, for almost all users of almost all distros (Gentoo being the notable exception), long gone.

Seems to me like a distributor or community supporter (or whoever) should, if they want this new kernel to work on an old distro, package it along with any dependencies.

This "problem" doesn't seem like a good reason to hold back progress in the kernel.

What's progress worth if nobody uses these kernels? It's already a problem that kernels start to get tested by a broader user base only after distributions start packaging them. Do you want to aggravate this further?
