Linux Journal has an article by John
maddog Hall in which he shares his experiences at the Software Livre
conference held in Brazil in early May. "... cooperation, community
and erva-mate. "Software Livre! Software Livre! Software Livre!"...the
words got louder and louder like a chant. No, not like a chant, it was a
chant--and I was leading it!"

Just a few things (non linux-related). Sometimes, foreigners tend to name things as they listen to them. Let me enlighten you =)
It's not called "erva-mate". It's called "yerba mate", pronounced as "yehr-bah mah-teh". It's a beverage that it's drinked in southamerican countries, mainly associated with the argentinian "gaucho".
That beverage contains caffeine in a very delicate dose, but enough to boost some long night of programming. Sorry for this intromision...
Greetings from Chile!

Hey, i'm sorry to break you the news, but ... to the Brazilian Gauchos it's really erva-mate!! We speak portuguese here, remember??
And it's really as strong in caffeine as black coffee, but (IMHO) the taste is much softer.
Besides that, the way it's done in the cuia makes it a warming beverage, good for the somewhat cold temperatures down in Rio Grande do Sul (as compared to the rest of Brasil :).
Greetings, ---H.

Now, that's a remembrance that spanish collides with portuguese, but they meet during pronouncement. (and i wonder if that word ever exists...) =)
I forgot totally that the Linux Convention was in Brazil.
Okay, flame me. It's seems caffeine boosts the testosterone level...=)
