I actually recieved a mail, telling me I should be more patient ;-)

Yes, you're right, I've tried trunk - it doesn't work very well, but OK, that makes sense. And the mailinglists and commitlogs are full of activity. So things are progressing - while Gnome continues with small improvements, continuing to bear their legacy libraries, unable to re-arange them.

The GNOME Project is actually working on refactoring and reducing their libraries into a few sensibly separated pieces in Project Ridley. They plan to move various external library code into mainline GNOME libraries, and split along the lines of OS independent components (GTK), X Window specific, and GNOME specific (GNOME-VFS).
