Gimmie, Alex Graveley's re-imagined desktop panel project. "Core
desktop interface elements such as menus and panels are frequently targets
for revision and replacement, owing to their importance and the difficulty
of developing a best-fit-for-the-most-users design. In a GUADEC 2006
presentation (the notes for which are available in PDF at the Gimmie Web
site), Graveley enumerates some problems marked for attention. Among them
are the underutilization of "recently used" lists for applications and
documents, the inflexibility of system menus, and the ambiguity of icons --
some are launchers, some are representations of running apps, etc."

Its new, fresh, and has some coolideas in a nice, and WORKING interface. After months and months of talk, I still have to see something from the innovation Plasma (KDE4) is going to offer, while on the Gnome side, things go steadily. Maybe I have to be more patient with KDE 4, but well, it just barely compiles, and just a few parts of it work more-or-less.

In regards to KDE4 I think you need to be a bit more patient. They are working hard on KDE4, but the first major thing to do is to port KDE to Qt4. Before that is done, they can't really do much work on Plasma. I do believe the port to QT4 is well underway, but I will leave that up to the KDE developers (which I often see commenting here) to tell more about (I'm just a humble user :).

Yes, you're right, I've tried trunk - it doesn't work very well, but OK, that makes sense. And the mailinglists and commitlogs are full of activity. So things are progressing - while Gnome continues with small improvements, continuing to bear their legacy libraries, unable to re-arange them.
Gimmie a new panel prototype (Linux.com) Posted Aug 6, 2006 4:01 UTC (Sun) by millenix (guest, #39711) [Link] The GNOME Project is actually working on refactoring and reducing their libraries into a few sensibly separated pieces in Project Ridley. They plan to move various external library code into mainline GNOME libraries, and split along the lines of OS independent components (GTK), X Window specific, and GNOME specific (GNOME-VFS).

Sounds like another reason to use and develop for GNOME: not only in the ABI stable (i.e. doesn't need to follow the annual C++ changes), but the API hasn't changed in about five years.
It took GnuCash this long to port to the GNOME 2.0 platform. How many KDE applications are stuck in disrepair waiting to port to 2.0, 3.0 or 4.0?

In other words, KDE3 has been stable for quite some years.
