Stable kernel releases 2.6.16.25 and 2.6.17.5

The 2.6.16.25 and 2.6.17.5 kernel releases are available. They contain a fix for an unpleasant permissions problem in /proc. There have been some reports that this fix does not play well with HAL on some systems; there is a separate fix for that problem which will probably be added into the distributor updates.

A few days ago LWN ran an article about a security bug and the article mentioned criticism that it was termed a "Denial of service" bug while in fact it allowed privilege escalation (local root). And now another local root bug is announced as a "unpleasant permissions problem in /proc"...

Just to make it clear: this is a local root hole for which an exploit has already been posted.

I think that's unintended irony on the part of LWN -- the actual message says "Fix nasty /proc vulnerability (CVE-2006-3626)".
