mplayer does single frame advance - use the . keyboard control. From the man page:

. Step forward. Pressing once will pause movie, every consecutive press will play one frame and then go into pause mode again (any other key unpauses).

Nice to know! Apparently mplayer can't do back-stepping yet, like e.g. avidemux (which is an editor, not really a player) is able to. Of course going back is more work ...
