Just use Smart referenced here:
Smart has vastly better multi-arch support and has better dependency resolution algorithms.
I use smart on SuSE after having experimented with apt (terrible multi-arch support) and yum (all of the problems you describe above).

Just use Smart Posted Jul 20, 2006 8:47 UTC (Thu) by quintesse (subscriber, #14569) [Link] Agreed, smart is really good at solving strange dependencies and has so far not given me any problems. The only things that I can see wrong with it are:
- occasional cyclic upgrades/downgrades where running smart multiple times will first upgrade a package and then downgrade it again, ad infinitum
- SLOW for large upgrades, forget about upgrading from FC5 to FC6 using smart
NB: For upgrades like that the advise seems to be: apt-get dist-upgrade and smart afterwards to fix any problems. And if you tried to do it using yum, well the mess is entirely your own fault.
