Smart has vastly better multi-arch support and has better dependency resolution algorithms.

I use smart on SuSE after having experimented with apt (terrible multi-arch support) and yum (all of the problems you describe above).

Agreed, smart is really good at solving strange dependencies and has so far not given me any problems. The only things that I can see wrong with it are:

- occasional cyclic upgrades/downgrades where running smart multiple times will first upgrade a package and then downgrade it again, ad infinitum

- SLOW for large upgrades, forget about upgrading from FC5 to FC6 using smart

NB: For upgrades like that the advise seems to be: apt-get dist-upgrade and smart afterwards to fix any problems. And if you tried to do it using yum, well the mess is entirely your own fault.
