The future of freedb

The freedb audio CD database project is falling apart: "freedb is not able to operate without Joerg and Ari. There are other - hopefully free - projects that will take over freedbs heritage in a better way and stay free. freedbs future did not seem to be kept free regarding the lastest developments, so I tried to steer against this as I felt it more important to stay free instead of getting fancy web 2.0 features. But unfortunately Joerg and Ari (the main doers behind freedb) disagreed with me and decided that they want to go another direction." If anyone wants to take over the project and domain name, the project will be allowed to continue. (Thanks to Richard Palmer.)

freedb is not a dbms, it's an audio CD database containing album and song information indexed by track number and length, intended to work with CD playing and ripping applications.

Oops, sorry about that. The article has been corrected.

Wow! This is a real bummer. Countless pieces of cd-ripping software rely on freedb (since the Gracenote ruined CDDB). It sounds like the key developers had a huge falling-out with the project lead, leading to their departure. The latest news on the site is slightly more hopeful, suggesting that a 3rd party will take over management of the service: "As of now, is seems very likely that freedb will operate its main services in the future".

However, the loss of the developers, and the last couple years of work on a new version, is rough. Even if a company that depends on the service (say, Roxio) takes over its operations, it's unlikely we will see future development.

As an administrator of one of the replicas (es.freedb.org) and coder of abcde (which relies on freedb to retrieve information of the track names) I feel very sad for the foreseable future of the service.

Also the way Mr. Kaiser has handled the issue is disappointing: after claiming and accusing Ari and Joerg that they wanted to take the project into a non-free direction, he erased the reply Joerg posted defending himself of the accusation.

I guess I will have to start adding lmusicbrainz support to my pet project...
