Gnash, the free Flash player, makes progress (NewsForge)

NewsForge looks at the Gnash project. "The Gnash project has been developing a free software Flash player since December. Filling one of the last major gaps on the GNU/Linux desktop, it is one of the Free Software Foundation's high-priority projects. We covered the project several months ago, when compiling the code was problematic. Now that Gnash has reached the 0.7.1 version, the player is still rough, but enough has been done to give us an indication of what the final version might be like."

with major websites embracing flash for more and more core functionality, we need an open solution. this isn't just an issue of "staying free", there are platforms like linux on ppc that have NO options for flash.

It's cool that they're making progress, but I think they're still far away from being really usable in daily life. Think about it - many Flash 7 movies don't work in Gnash yet, but Adobe/Macromedia has already released Flash 9. Most new movies/games on major flash sites like Newgrounds already require Flash 8, and given that that trend started right after Flash 8 was released, I think we'll see more and more submissions there requiring Flash 9 now.

Other websites might be more conservative, but unless you're on a platform for which there is no other Flash player besides Gnash at all, I'd say they're still very far from being a viable alternative to the proprietary Flash product.

Still, good luck to them - I really do hope they'll continue their great work and catch up soon!
