Subject:  Announcing Fedora Core 6 Test 1 (5.90)
Date:  Wed, 21 Jun 2006 10:55:10 -0400

Just two years ago, a brave test pilot by the name of Mike Melvill
successfully guided SpaceShipOne 62 miles above California, USA,
overcoming technical problems that could have proven tragic to become
the first civilian to reach space, part of a team effort that won the
ANSARI X Prize. A team of civilians working together to accomplish a
dream, an unbelievable goal.

Today, we of the Fedora Project send our "test pilot" out into the
world, hoping to do the impossible. Improve upon the last release! (:

Fedora Core 6 Test 1 (5.90) Now Available
==================================
The Fedora Project announces the first release of the Fedora Core 6
development cycle, available for the i386, x86_64, and ppc/ppc64
architectures, including Intel based Macintosh computers. Beware that
Test releases are recommended only for Linux experts/enthusiasts or for
the technology evaluation, as many parts are likely to be broken adn the
rate of change is rapid.

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Core/Schedule
Test 2 is scheduled for release July 19, marking the developmental
freeze of the Fedora Core 6 release. No new features after this point.
It is important that we get your help in testing, reporting and
suggesting fixes for bugs, and directing the technological improvements
we attempt with this release of Fedora Core. Please direct bugs to
http://bugzilla.redhat.com, product Fedora Core, Version fc6test1. As
always, be sure that your bug is not already fixed by updates and search
for existing bugs before filing.

Thanks to all in the Fedora Project Community who have contributed to
this release. Your continued efforts are what makes Fedora possible.

Seems my copy got a bit muddled. Mike Melville was the first civilian
to reach space in privately funded and developed space craft, rather
than a government funded vessel.

Other important changes are native OpenOffice.org for x86_64 and Mono in the Core distribution. On the other hand, I'm disappointed that Mozilla 1.7.13 is still included instead of the more modern Seamonkey.

mono was in core in fc5.

It seems FC6 is following in FC5's footsteps a little too quickly. Are the changes that significant to justify a new release ?

releases of fedora are not featured-based they are time based.

Having said that there are a lot of new items in fc6.

check out the test release.

first civilian to reach space?

Beg to differ. To the best of my understanding 'civilian' means 'not in
the armed forces', so much of NASA is technically civilian.

The first people to reach space who were not members of the armed forces
were Konstantin Feoktistov and Boris Yegerov, on October 12 1964:

On American missions, McDonnell-Douglas engineer Charles Walker 'reached
space' in 1984. 'Political' space tourists like Senator Jake Garn and
Prince Sultan Salman Abdelazize Al-Saud flew on the shuttle in 1985.
Dennis Tito and Mark Shuttleworth also come to mind.

Maybe this announcement meant to say something else, like 'the first
space *pilot* who wasn't employed by a government', or just 'the first
privately-funded space mission'.

The correction is already above (search page for "muddled"), and a look at the original post, and this follow-up, shows that it only took him 20 minutes to correct himself on the mailing list.
