There are a number of reasons why that approach wouldn't work for Ubuntu, but they aren't relevant since it wouldn't solve the problem anyway. We can move to new upstream versions without resorting to using precompiled binaries; the issue is that this introduces new bugs, unexpectedly changes behaviour, and breaks configuration changes (such as extensions) for users who are using an otherwise stable product.
