There is one little known problem, being that the graphical installer does not work.
Meaning that 90% of people will not install it. Surely it is pretty pointless releasing with such a serious bug? Short of the OS failing to boot, I can't think offhand of a more serious problem.
A bunch of people in Redmond will be splitting their sides with laughter over this.

Meaning you don't know what Alpha means with software releases. Meaning you don't know how to read the release notes. Meaning you are not the intended audience for this release.
Microsoft, and other software vendors, at times release software in alpha builds that have problems of this severity or greater, however like in this case, such problems are documented. Often these releases by closed-source, non-free, proprietary vendors are no made available to the general public, nor the release notes, and are protected by Non-Dislosure contracts. Thus the general public rarely, if ever, learns of the problem releases.

It's Alpha, interested non-developers could start to look at it when it's Beta. That said, I think SUSE shouldn't announce its development releases so widely (in case this was not only sent to some suse-announce mailing list). During 10.1, I already got tired of N+1 alpha/beta announcements.

Well, fortunately, that's the way of open source. The only way to let developers know, outside of forums, email lists, and development websites, is to post it on news sites that developers frequent. I know one thing's for sure, I appreciate lwn.net for posting this brief news snippet because I didn't know it was out yet, and wouldn't have known it if it didn't go across my rss ticker.
This is the reason why I like this site.

I am actually laughing at your comment. Do you know that there is also text mode installation?

Ok I am a Red Hat person.. but please..
a) You don't know what alpha software is
b) You don't know about text installs.
c) The message was aimed at people who are going to do initial deployments not for the general masses. You try out alpha software to start getting in work requests for the final software.. [We have 400 desktops, and we need this here. what can we do to help get 10.2 final with it?]

90% of which people? Of potential alpha testers? Of current SUSE users? Of potential SUSE 10.2 users? Of all existing computer users? Of the whole human population?
I guess you are underestimating intelligence of people doing alpha testing of distributions.
