"You know, Chandler, you being here is the best gift I could
  ask for Christmas."

 "Aww. Thanks Pheebs."

"Ok, now where's my real present?"

Red Hat, Inc. has a holiday gift for you - PHOEBE, a new
beta release of Red Hat Linux.

PHOEBE is 6 CDs of software (3 binary, 3 source), including, among
other things:
 - the latest in bleeding-edge desktop and XFree86 technology
 - Mozilla 1.2.1, with Xft antialiased fonts
 - glibc-2.3.1, with the new Native POSIX Thread Library (NPTL),
   for performant and scalable threading

PHOEBE is, of course, not intended for use on mission critical
or other production systems.

As always, we do not recommend the use of beta software on mission
critical or production systems. In fact, we may laugh at those who
try. Problems with PHOEBE should be reported via bugzilla, at:

 http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla

Phoebe: a new Red Hat beta

Posted Dec 24, 2002 10:17 UTC (Tue) by alspnost (subscriber, #2763) [Link]

I'm downloading and installing it as I write! I have to say, this really looks like being a *killer* distribution. I was considering a move away from Red Hat, due to the anti-KDE nonsense and poor multimedia, but in the end, they seem to have the best technology at the moment.

Red Hat 8.0 was quite good in the end (especially for a dot-zero), and this will iron out the wrinkles and offer all of the very latest Linux technology in a nice pretty package. I believe the KDE mess is easy to fix (I'll soon find out for sure!), and the missing multimedia stuff is easy to add thanks to those wonderful chaps at freshrpms.net - so I reckon 8.1 will be going on my machine (to replace 7.3) next year.

Despite recent controversies, Red Hat has given a lot to the free software community, and continues to offer the most cutting edge technology to blow away the Linux doubters. Keep up the good work guys....

I have a similar feeling when I first install the RH 8.1 beta. The installation is smooth and the artwork is great. Multi-language support has also been improved.
But after a while, I switch back to Arch Linux with KDE 3.1rc. Even though people keep talking about evolution, GNOME on the whole is still a bit behind KDE, IMHO. Maybe lack some degrees of interactions/intergrations between applications.

It's really easy to specify during Red Hat's installation process that you want KDE installed rather than GNOME, or in addition to GNOME. Although Red Hat defaults to a GNOME-only installation, I can't understand why anyone would let this alone deter him or her from using Red Hat.

However, I can think of better reasons not to use it:

1. I tried 8.0 on my Dell Inspiron 3200 notebook, and have wiped it and replaced it with the new beta. In both versions, my PCMCIA socket drivers weren't loaded, so my PC cards aren't being recognized. (Mandrake 8.2 and 9.0, which I tried prior to Red Hat, picked up the PC cards automatically during installation.) Therefore, I haven't been able to connect to the Internet with Red Hat.

2. In Red Hat 8.0, I was able to install new RPM packages by clicking on them, or right-clicking and choosing the appropriate option from the pop-up menu. This doesn't work on my machine in the beta version; I get an "Unknown Error" message.

3. Soundconfig worked OK for me in 8.0 (although I had to choose a SoundBlaster card from the list rather than the Crystal card that my machine actually has). In the beta version, it does not.

4. I'm experiencing the usual slowness and "hanging" that I have found in all versions of Linux that I have tried so far. (My most-used Linux application to date has been Mandrake's "xKill," whose sole function is to terminate applications that aren't responding. With Red Hat I eventually found that the same result could be achieved by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Esc.)

Has anyone else had these problems?

Forgot to mention in my last post:

1. I installed both 8.0 and the beta from isos downloaded to my hard drive. Once the installation process is complete and one has started Linux on his or her machine, Red Hat's package management program doesn't allow one to install new packages from isos on the hard drive — only from CDs. Mandrake, on the other hand, allows the user to specify the path to the installation files.

2. In choosing packages to install during Mandrake's installation process, one can toggle between tree view (i.e., applications listed by category) or flat (alphabetical) view — a great convenience, in my opinion. Red Hat offers only a tree view, requiring that the user either know the category to which Red Hat has assigned the app he or she wants to install, or scroll through every category to find it.

3. To "slowness" and "hanging," I would add "frequent application crashes." Compared to what? Well, let's just say I have used other, non open-source operating systems since the mid-'80s (I won't name them, to avoid opening up a political can of worms), and find that, based on my admittedly limited experience with Linux, its performance lags considerably behind.
