Working Model of $100 Laptop Steals MITX Spotlight (eWeek)

eWeek attends the Massachusetts Innovation & Technology Exchange where Nicholas Negroponte brought the first working model of the $100 laptop. "This working model sported many differences from the early prototypes that were seen previously. The biggest change is that the laptop no long features a directly attached crank for powering the laptop in areas without electricity--the crank has now been moved to the power supply."

From laptop.org:

Please note that the $100 laptops—not yet in production—will not be available for sale. The laptops will only be distributed to schools directly through large government initiatives.
I think that's a bit rubbish. Sure, they would mecessarily be more expensive sold singly, but it reads to me like "This will be a great thing to spend other people's money on, but I wouldn't open my own wallet". What a shame.

It's more like "the only way we can get the favorable pricing to meet the $100 target is if the parts vendors are not competing with themselves in wealthy markets."
