Linux Becomes Accessible to Average Users (Saint Paul Pioneer Press)

Remember the installation nightmare stories that were so common only a couple of years ago? Well this newspaper article isn't one of them. "Frustrated with crashes on a borrowed Windows 98 laptop, I returned it and ditched Microsoft, installing Linux instead of Windows 95 on an old 133-megahertz Pentium PC (yes, original Pentium, not Pentium II or III)."

Article misleads potential new users

Posted Dec 23, 2002 11:26 UTC (Mon) by grmd (subscriber, #4391) [Link]

The author uses a P133 laptop with 48 Mbytes RAM and implies this is powerful enough to run OpenOffice.Org software, then goes on to discuss using command line applications as if they will fulfill the desires of someone who wants a replacement for Microsoft's offerings.

Yes, well put.
I'm using a P133 with 64 MB ( I guess 48, 32 and maybe 24 MB would also
do) as X-terminal to my fast box (AMD 2000+), for this use it works perfectly.
As a stand-alone GUI box I'd install xfce, netscape and wordperfect 8.

KDE, Gnome, Mozilla and especially OpenOffice are to heavy for this box.
OpenOffice is even slow on my fast box.

Bye
Alex
