Unfortunately that aforementioned package of source code is somewhat less than portable:

~ $ tar zxf sun-java5_1.5.0-06.orig.tar.gz
sun-java5-1.5.0-06/
sun-java5-1.5.0-06/jdk-1_5_0_06-distro-linux-amd64.bin
sun-java5-1.5.0-06/jdk-1_5_0_06-distro-linux-i586.bin

The source code isn't in the "source package" (orig.tar.gz + diff.gz), it's in the "binary package" (.deb) called sun-java5-source, confusingly enough.
