When last I tried it on my laptop, it failed. Apparently that happened
because Stellarium was trying to do real-time updates and my CPU just
isn't fast enough to do all the updates it wants to do before it's time
for the next round.

I wonder if 0.8.0 has (or if any of its immediate successors will have)
an option to attempt less frequent updates.

Give it a try. It's free.

Build or buy

Debian-unstable still has version 0.7, so I would have to build it. So the question really is, is there any point in building 0.8 myself, or would it fail just like 0.7 did?

Maybe the real answer is that I should build it myself, and then add a feature to change the update rate so it works, and send a patch.
