Xubuntu 6.06 beta. "XFCE is a nice feature for those who have an
older system and can't afford or just want to try something new. This
system has quite a few nifty programs and ran quite smoothly. It was quite
easy to setup user accounts when you ran the installation program and gave
you the option of adding one user or many users at the same time."

The reviewer of Xubuntu needs to quantify his statements. Specifically, what is the minimum hardware configuration of Xubuntu -- will it run on 32MB of main memory, for example? Does it have a default suite of low-resource usage software (e.g. AbiWord rather than OpenOffice)? He says repeatedly that the advantage of XFCE is that "is not a resource hog" -- without giving enough information to determine how it will run, say, on my old 486-based Toshiba laptop with 24MB of main memory. "nice for those who have an older system" - but how much older? Sure, I can do the research myself, but a few numbers to support his statements would have let me know whether it was even worth looking into.

My assumption is that you need at least Pentium + 64MB of RAM and
some swap to to use Xubuntu and it to be at all usable.
I recently installed Ubuntu Breezy server install + X server from Dapper +
IceWM (no session manager) + Firefox + Gtk/gnome apps + X and SDL
games on P166 with 96MB RAM + an external modem and it's fairly
usable. XFCE has a full desktop setup so it will need a bit more
memory than IceWM (there was plenty left of my 96MB, I just
wanted to reserve all possible memory to Firefox which is bit
of a hog, so I used just IceWM).
Www-browsing was surprisingly fast, and Gtk program menus & dialog
opening surprisingly slow (in comparison to browsing).
You might be able to run Damn Small Linux on the 486 + 24MB RAM. :-)
