Overall, I agree with you, but just to nit-pick:

You say "no distro in its right mind supports wholesale kernel upgrades in a distribution release's lifetime"

Gentoo does. For instance, Gentoo 2005.1 was released in early August 2005. After it was found that it didn't install on some newer AMD64 systems, Gentoo updated the kernel and released 2005.1-r1 in mid-November.
