PalmSource has high hopes for Linux (vnunet)

Vnunet covers a LinuxWorld presentation by Didier Diaz. ""What Linux has done on the PC and server can also happen on the phone and handheld," Didier Diaz, vice president of marketing at PalmSource, said during a presentation at LinuxWorld in Boston. "We want to speed up the creation of a complete Linux-based platform for the mobile phone." PalmSource is the developer of the Palm OS mobile operating system. The company was acquired last November by Access of Japan, and has since shifted its focus entirely to the creation of a Linux operating system for mobile phones. Several other mobile phone makers have created Linux phones, including Samsung and Motorola, but unlike the competition, ALP will feature APIs that allow developers to create applications for the device."

I think they should open source their hotsync app, drop their desktop software, and instead start shipping Evolution - especially since it is now running on Windows. If they started supporting it on Windows, OS X (I realize there is no native port for OS X now), and Linux I think they would have a much more capable system, and could stop chasing Microsoft in support for Outlook while providing a better groupware client for free on all the major desktops.

Please, don't force Evolution on us... since it can't even figure out how to do IMAP properly... (can't set the mail directory without losing the INBOX). And this is the version in Ubuntu Dapper. :-(

Wouldn't it be best for them to ship something less buggy, not more buggy as a replacement?
