Sendmail may turn tools over to open source (ZDNet)

ZDNet talks to Sendmail's Eric Allman about the release of several applications as open-source software. "One candidate for sharing is the company's Mailcenter Store, Allman said. The technology archives e-mail once it reaches its destination server and lets personal computers access it over a network. Another possibility is the Mailstream Manager, an engine that handles mail according to policies and that accepts plug-ins for tasks such as screening out viruses, or complying with regulatory requirements."

I have used Sendmail without proprietary add ons for many years to support a more complex than average mail environment, as I support a number of mailing lists using Mailman. The reasons for using Sendmail are somewhat historical due to my lists going through a dialup machine originally, but there is still good support in Sendmail for less common setups. Despite having 2 large tomes on the subject, I still find its configuration difficult when it comes to fine tuning. There are various things I would like to be able to do with it, but where the learning curve is the main constraint. I'm hoping the Sendmail X rewrite and the release of relevant support tools as free software will improve matters. If not, it seems unlikely that many new mail admins would want to master Sendmail as there are easier programs around that deal adequately with simpler mail setups.

I've certainly avoided sendmail as far as possible, and given the chance happily replace it with postfix. (http://www.postfix.org).

Hello, My name is Smooge,

and I am a sendmail administrator

My first software project (beyond Hello World and Wumpus) was to port Sendmail-4? to LynxOS. I had to go through many many many lines of code and learnt more about the old internal db format and other things than I think of.

It took about 96 hours of coding time where I think I slept twice, but I got my first email out in 1993... and since then have never been able to use another MTA. The syntax is just too easy to see in my dreams.

Anyway, I admit I have a problem, and came here :).
