SourceForge.net Community Choice Award winners announced (NewsForge)

NewsForge covers the announcement of the SourceForge Community Choice Awards at the LinuxWorld Expo. "For the past few months, SourceForge users have been voting for the best projects on the site in various project categories, as well as an overall choice. Nearly 250,000 votes were cast to determine the winners." First place winners include: BitTorrent, phpMyAdmin, Wine, Gaim, a PHP PayPal API, Xbox Media Center, Linux on Xbox, FileZilla, WinSCP, phpMyAdmin, Asterisk, and Azureus.

Hmm, phpMyAdmin wins in two categories - which probably means badly formulated questionary.

Congrats to the winners, I'm sure they deserved it--but basically the prizes went to easily recognizable projects with names well known in the free software community.

Getting a lot of people involved in voting has nice publicity effects, but I wonder what it would be like if we could have a vote among people who intensively use projects for the day-to-day work and could compare the nominees on the details.

Anyway, I see this contest as a way of celebrating the range of free software in general and showing appreciation for the creativity of developers.
