My quest for a Linux audio player (Linux.com)
I could be doing something wrong... Initially I followed the ubuntu non-US instructions. Those were great. That didn't fix everything so I just did a bunch of searches with apt-cache and installed everything that looked like a multimedia plugin. Then I did a dist-upgrade to dapper and repeated the process.
Banshee doesn't work and ends up eating all my RAM so I have to switch TTYs and kill it while the keyboard is still responsive. Banshee does encode stuff to .ogg but it just refuses to play it.
When I put a cd in rythmbox opens up but I have to click on each song for it to play and that's annoying.
vlc pretty much works for everything.
totem-xine pretty much works for everything.
totem-gstreamer doesn't work.
gxine rarely works.
I use xmms for mp3s and audio cds.
Most video plays. Quick time is still problematic.
I'm not using the ubuntu version of firefox so the gxine-plugin barely ever works. Even under ideal conditions it was pretty crash prone. I did like that you could maxamize the window though.
