A point not mentioned in TFA is that MPD is a daemon, i.e. it runs in the background and continues to play even if you close the frontend (various are available, from command line to GUI). You can open a frontend at any time and it will show the current playlist and what's playing etc. It handles large collections easily and seems very stable. If it's playing and you shut down the computer, it will automatically continue at that point when you turn it back on. When you have proper ID3/vorbis tags (e.g. using easytag) searching and sorting is a breeze. So that's the player I favor at the moment.
