'World's largest' Wi-Fi network keeps Linux under wraps (Computerworld)

Computerworld looks at the use of Linux for setting up a large wireless network in Victoria's Department of Education. ""We are aware that the modules used in EduPass are open source already, and so is Red Hat Linux, but we have erred on the side of caution," Meadows said, adding her team has "thought long and hard" about it. "There are big security companies that build on Linux and don't release the code [and] we give credit to Openssh, Freeraduis, Squid, and Linux which are all open to scrutiny. The bits that are proprietary concern how all servers are randomly set to check updates and a lot of advanced proxy features." Even without releasing EduPass's code, DET is being a good open source citizen by remaining in "close touch" with and contributing "issues" back to the Freeraduis and Openssh projects."

To some people, source is like underwear. They're embarrassed to let anyone see it, even if it started out clean.

Really, as long as they don't close the source to GPL software, and don't try to distribute a modified product without the source to their stuff, they should be licit. Closed additions must remain in-house; they will have to either turn down requests to share the combined system, or open it, should anyone like what they've done and want to do likewise.

Licit != kosher; closed !== secure. As long as they don't rely on obscurity, and keep good coding habits, EduPass will at some point be openable without necessary security issues. But I don't envy their work with fewer eyes on bugs.

Not that I'm not preaching to the choir.

"but we have erred on the side of caution,"

Umm, I don't think so. I think this statement is
overly verbose.

Might have better been put as;

"but we have erred."

Well at least they realise it was an error, I suppose.
