Accelerated X flame wars! -- Maybe not (Free Software Magazine)

Free Software Magazine looks at XGL and AIGLX. "When I first heard about these two competing solutions my immediate response was "Oh no! Not ANOTHER flame war...". But once I examined the two of them, I found that they're not as mutually exclusive as it first seemed. To explain why I'll go through a summary of how each works and the differences and similarities between them." (Found on GnomeDesktop)

It's difficult to take an author seriously when he/she uses the term "X Windows" when referring to X11.

Oh, please

It's hard to take a commenter seriously when he/she dismisses a substantive article over an old terminology argument.

Read it again, pretending that the author used the term that you (and, granted, the original authors of the X Window System) prefer.

Oh, please

To be honest, I was thinking the same thing as bk.

FWIW, Jon Smirl is pretty critical of the article, as well:

Search for the subject "Poor web host, waste of time" the sixth post down on that page.

I found the article to be interesting, but it seems to have some problems.

Oh, please indeed

Terminology matters. Clear thought requires clear language, with the result that clear
thinkers can be easily distinguished by looking at the language they use. When someone
starts lecturing you about a subject, but messes up the terminology, that's a good, solid
reason to take whatever he says with a grain of salt, because it shows sloppy thinking and/
or a pretension to greater knowledge than he has.

Datapoint: I have met X developers content to call it X Windows. It's just a more convenient name.

Aren't you supposed to get $20 million to stop calling your project ".indows" anyway?

That applies to Lindows and even then we should have told gates to stuff his wedge where it causes hime the most pain , For imformation purposes

"Windows " are usually square or oblong things made from plastic and/or wood with the openings filled with a substance called Glass at best a semi solid therefore the trade mark if any can be applied is ownend by the bloke way back in history (probably a roman) who first invented the "Window " and certainly NOT by that egotistical twat in Redmond W(*****) billy goat Gates and anyone that thinks otherwise needs to go back to school and RE learn history ..

Pete .

What have the Romans ever done for us?

Okay, the aqueduct, fine, sanitation, okay, and the roads go without
saying. But *windows*?

The TRADEMARK certainly ain't owned by a Roman. They own things like Fenestras ( which is why you can describe a linux pc as "defenestrated" :-)

I gather it was some Icelandic bloke who invented the Wind-Eye.

Cheers,
Wol

Defenestrating a PC would be throwing it out of a window. Throwing Windows out of a computer is more properly termed "reverse defenestration".

Well, since I've been developing for X since X10 (gad, almost 20 years now), I use the term "X Windows" to refer to either X10 or X11, at least sometimes.

Although I probably tend to call it just "X" unless I'm referring to a specific library or an X server in particular.

Personally I don't take seriously anyone who makes a big deal out of it.

Not that I'm wanting to make a big deal out of it, but does anyone know what the big deal was about it? The XFree documentation did make a (slightly) big deal out of it, going out of the way to point out that one should not call it X Windows. Was there really an issue there, or was that just one documentation writer's quirkiness?

Personally, I like just 'X', and dislike 'X Windows' simply because it sounds a bit "me too" by association.

No, it's difficult to take you seriously if that's your only gripe about the article.

Please note: I develop for X since X10 came out, more than 20 years ago, in 1985. I have X core developers under my personal friends. They don't have the issues that you seem to have. Please stop beating that bush on LWN, this is not /..

So, do you have technical critic on the article? Post them, but not that drivel.

Joachim

Funny, when I first heard about each of these solutions my immediate response was "Oh Yes!". When I heard about some type of competition between the two my reponse was a resounding "OH YES!".
It's about time our X server got some hardware-induced (read: free) performance upgrades. And a little competition will only serve to squeeze the most out of that hardware.
Some of my aging boxes w/ agreeable video cards can use a free boost.
