South Korea plans 'Linux showcase city' (ZDNet UK)

ZDNet UK reports that the South Korean government has plans to showcase the use of Linux, by paying for a city and a university to deploy the software on their servers and desktops. "The government believes the showcase city and university will encourage other organisations to migrate to open source software. "The test beds will prompt other cities and universities to follow suit through the showcasing of Linux as the major operating system without any technical glitches and security issues," said MIC director Lee Do-kyu, according to The Korea Times."

Wow. Well, you've got to admit - they aim high. I wish them success in deploying an OS on every single one of their computers without any technical or security issues whatsoever.

That was clearly "sales talk" meant to get the project started. I mean, when as the last time you heard the proponent of any IT project give the more realistic description: "this is going to be very difficult, and like most IT projects it will probably fall far short of the original targets while overrunning all cost estimates, but please let us try anyway"...

Mmmm... Impending Doom...

Why do I get the feeling that this might not necessarily turn out for the best? On purely implementation grounds, not on the strength of Linux, though that's where any failures will be pointed at.

Maybe I'm just too pessimistic.

Maybe they'll fake the results. ;)
