Well it looks like that was only because he didn't specify a root= argument when booting the kernel. It look like he was only trying to test the early boot process.

Surely it's more likely that he doesn't have a working driver for the underlying SCSI controller or disk and therefore couldn't specify a root device.

You need only look at the boot log to see that the kernel discovered his 4 SCSI disks and one ATAPI CDROM, as well as the four ethernet interfaces and various USB root hubs. It really is true that root= was not specified.

Indeed, he's now got a full Ubuntu system running on it.
