BEA Systems, Inc. has announced
that it will open source a significant portion of BEA Kodo, its persistence
engine, under the name Open JPA. "Today's announcement will benefit
all Java users, particularly those who prefer to develop using a blended
model of commercial software and open source frameworks."

Hmmm. Not familar with this particular program, but does "particularly those who prefer to develop using a blended model of commercial software and open source frameworks" translate to "not actually useful except in conjunction with our closed-source software"?
The prase "blended model" probably refers to choice of license

Not sure either, but I interpret it as meaning "We'll choose the Apache license over the GPL". I found an interview on the bea web[0] that seems to confirm that the software will be licensed using the Apache license.
Still, who know what that particular marketing-speak means, eh? =)
