Um, these groups aren't all hacking their own totally independent X servers, you know. Some of these things are competing to find the best alternative (Xe?GL, say); some are simply incompatible (Cairo versus Glitz), but Cairo/Glitz, Xe?GL, the DRM/DRI layer, and the compositing extensions will *all work together*.
These are all attempts to *implement* common building blocks!
(As far as I know, `giving MS cold sweats' isn't anything motivating any of the developers. Giving X-based Unix boxes as good a graphical infrastructure as, say, MacOS X is much more relevant. MS is just a nasty company. They will die in the end: all companies do. But killing free software is about as hard as killing science, i.e., they might as well give up, we will outlive them.)
