Linux powers autonomous military ground vehicle (LinuxDevices)

LinuxDevices looks at an unmanned vehicle that is controlled by Linux. "iRobot used embedded Linux to build an autonomous unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) aimed at military scouting, guarding, and hauling applications. The "R-Gator" is based on John Deere's diesel-powered, 658cc M-Gator military utility vehicle platform, with control, navigation, and object-avoidance systems based on BlueCat Linux from LynuxWorks."

Better linux at the controls than windoze. But I still think that there are far too many dangers involved in autonomous military vehicles, whether they fly in the air, sail the seas or trundle across the ground. The average military human brain may not be too smart but does at least have the capability to disobey orders which don't make sense.

That is why when there is a weapons systems, there is always a man in the middle. Of course I know and you know that eventually we will be comfortable enough with this idea and someone would get rid of that expensive component, but that would be a different world probably.

Asimov proposed the 3 laws of robitics...

There needs to be one more law here for the designers...

If we have learned anything from Sci-fi regarding AI is that there should be an easily accessable, perhaps even redudant, off switch(es).

No encrypted passwords around soft-resets, no endless, self-sustaining power supplies. No matter what you do, make sure that the power cord can be reached and cut externally one way or the other.

:-)

Apparently, with the iRobot, you just drag it into the nearest recycle bin...
