Tarmle: The Bad Guys Win

Here's a speculative story describing our DRMed future. "You don't really own your home computer, or even the data you keep on it. Oh, you paid for it, just like you paid for the fibre-optic Internet connection that it can't function without, but now it squats under your TV using your electricity and does more work for the content industry than for you. The nightly security patches it downloads for itself don't secure your computer against attackers, they secure the system and software against you." (Seen on BoingBoing).

Sounds like the thing *already* under the TV... ie, the satellite box!

Satellite Box vs. "Integrated" Home Media Box

Posted Jan 25, 2006 18:50 UTC (Wed) by AnswerGuy (subscriber, #1256) [Link]

There is a substantive difference between a satellite/cable receiver box (which is provided to you as part of your service --- and is not "purchased" but rather is leased/rented to you), and a device which integrates access to that service along with PVR/DVD/VHS, music and computing services.

If your satellite/cable receiver becomes a means by which some companies limit and disable access to ancillary media then "the bad guys win."

Imagine a world in which every automobile was required to have a module that could receive a signal that could disable it. Now imagine that this was government mandated but the keys/passwords to this "feature" were controlled by Amex, Citibank, and the credit card companies.

Now imagine that you're late on your Amex payment and your stuck at the side of the road with your thumb in the air!

That's what DRM is about.

I belive DRM is going to try to bring te TV style "brain damage" to NET surfers, and many people will prefer the illusion of that "matrix" to have to face reality. So expect it in force.

You described it perfectly. This is exactly what the DRM Gig on the
Internet is about.
