Group urges limits on open source (News.com)

News.com looks at the latest round of FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) from the MS-backed Initiative for Software Choice. "This week, the Initiative for Software Choice counterattacked, telling the Defense Information Systems Agency that the Pentagon should not "openly promote the use" of open-source software, arguing that proprietary products are not inherently less secure."

Technically true, but open source software tends to be far easier to fix once a vulnerability is discovered (as it inevitably will be, open source or not).

Funny how groups like this completely (conveniently?) overlook "minor details" like this one…

OTOH, it's also funny how careful Microsoft's wordsmithing is here. It appears to be written with the understanding that the people in the DoD at whom this is aimed are technically sophisticated enough to see through and dismiss their standard line of "closed source is inherently more secure".

I think that in itself is a victory.
