X.org Developer's Conference

Here's an event announcement that we somehow failed to get up earlier: the X.Org Developer's Conference will be held February 8 to 10 in Santa Clara, California. Coming on the heels of the X11R7.0 release, this conference should offer some interesting insights into where X development goes next. Scheduled talks include a session by Jim Gettys on graphics in the One Laptop Per Child project and an intriguing talk on "NVIDIA driver internals."

The intriguing bit of the NVidia Driver's internals talk is that it will be made by an NVidia employee, Andy Ritger, who according to http://linux.sys-con.com/read/46892.htm, leads the Linux graphics driver team.

I think I will wait for this talk to decide what will my new laptop be. If NVidia was suddenly to decide to be more open... Dreaming...

If NVidia was suddenly to decide to be more open...

Yep, that would surely enlarge my laptop "white" list which at the moment consists of only intel graphics ones.

How can I found out what graphics chips have open specs and open source drivers that are supported by the manufacturer?

The dri project wiki has some not very up to date information.

It's pretty much just INTEL and early ATI for 3D, though there is the r300 project trying to support newer ATI chips without specs.

Apparently the R300 driver in XOrg/Mesa CVS works and is fairly stable. Caveat: I haven't used it myself, I'm stuck in the stone age with a Radeon 9200 :).

I doubt that is going to happen in any way. More likely the talk will focus not on hardware interaction, but on the complexities of building a driver core for X that doesn't use DRI/XAA/EXA and possibly some of the driver architecture issues which would be useful for all drivers in X.org.

NVIDIA Driver Internals

It might be worth noting that Andy gave a talk of the same title at last year's XDC in Cambridge.
