I have no first hand experience with binary drivers, but modularizations was (and is) mostly demanded by binary/closed source video drivers.

Due to licensing problems no open source drivers are in line of sight. (*)

That's very sad. I think that modularization of X is probably a good thing for a lot of reasons-- but I'm also kind of sad to see things be made easier for binary/closed-source drivers. As it gets easier to use those, the push will be even less for open source drivers. Pretty soon, those of us who don't want to use binary-only drivers but do want 3D are going to be stuck scouring eBay for years-old Radeon cards that don't perform to modern standars, and praying that the AGP bus never goes away.
