Latest Gaim Beta Arrives (eWeek)

eWeek takes a look at Gaim 2.0beta1. "After several months of delay, the first beta of the popular open-source IM client Gaim is now available. This new beta, Gaim 2.0beta1, now includes support for several IM (instant messaging) protocols, such as the SIP/SIMPLE protocols, Apple Inc.'s Bonjour, the older Zephyr protocol, Novell Inc.'s GroupWise Novell protocol and several more obscure protocols such as the Polish Gadu-Gadu."

I actually run it and have no problem so far. I would just like if it would have ssl built in. I don't like having to install mozilla or gnutls to be able to stay in touch with my friends still using MSN messenger.

The new interface is clean and efficient...

Gadu-Gadu and Zephyr support have been in GAIM for a long time, actually.

The killer feature everyone was waiting for (and talking about) was the
compatibility with Google Talk. Google has published the Jingle protocol,
they have employed a leader Gaim dev, the VOIP-enabled version was
announced on the Gaim website ... much publicity for nothing yet :(
That doesn't prevent Gaim to be a very good product though.

Google Talk is essentially just Jabber, and you can use GAIM for that - you may not get any extra-spiffy features that Google Talk may or may not have (I've never used it with anything except GAIM, so I can't say whether these features exist or not), but the basic functionality is definitely there, and has been before 2.0, too.

I think xav's point is that the voice stuff (Jingle) from google talk isn't in this beta yet.

I've read that it's still supposed to be in Gaim 2.0, but many of us were expecting an announced beta of Gaim 2.0 to include this since it is probably the most striking new feature.

Apperantly it is possible to build Gaim (Gaim-vv branch?) and Psi with working Jingle support already though. It just depends on how much time you want to put into it.

Exactely. I'm already having a GTalk account with Gaim 1.x (Jabber account really), but I was eagerly waiting for the gaim-vv merge, and I'm not alone.

It's a pity Lotus Sametime support was disabled in the beta. It was working in the CVS versions.

It's not disabled, you just need meanwhile >= 1.0.0 installed (and the relevant headers from -dev or -devel) if you're compiling Gaim yourself.

Yes, and meanwhile works just nicely in Gaim 1.5.0 too, with the gaim-meanwhile plugin. It's just been integrated in 2.0.
